Problem / Question
A cold plate looks simple but concentrates several requirements at once: thermal contact, fluid sealing and pressure integrity.
Key factors
- Thermal interface flatness drives contact resistance.
- The seal is a system: fitting type, groove geometry and surface finish together.
- Flow path and channel geometry affect pressure drop.
- Where a single-piece route is wasteful, brazing or a machined-and-bonded route may be better.
Manufacturing considerations
Machined channels give freedom before tooling. Joined assemblies can reduce material removal. The choice is a cost, integrity and volume decision.
What information a supplier needs
Heat load, allowable pressure drop, fluid and fittings, and the mating surface requirements. Leak-test expectations should be stated explicitly.
