Problem / Question
An RFQ that lacks key inputs forces the supplier to guess, which slows the response and weakens the quote.
The checklist
- Part or project name, and what it is for.
- Drawing and 3D CAD (STEP), plus a BOM if it is an assembly.
- Material and finish, or the requirement if material is open.
- Critical tolerances and inspection expectations.
- Quantity now and expected annual volume.
- Target date and any cost target.
- Existing supplier issue, if this is a re-source.
Common mistakes
- Sending a PDF without CAD.
- Omitting quantity, so the route cannot be chosen.
- Leaving material to 'whatever is cheapest' when the application needs otherwise.
What information a supplier needs
The seven items above are enough to begin an engineering review. Anything missing can be asked, but stating it up front saves a round trip.
